After forty years of John Lennon’s death, ’20/20′ tells tale of his life and lingering bequest

Ahead Dec. 8, 1980, the earth lived however as it memorized about the death of John Lennon, a song icon and former partner of The Beatles. Now, almost 40 years after that famous day – and days after what would give birth to lived his 80th birthday – the season premiere of “20/20” warns the tale of Lennon’s existence, last days and enduring bequest through the gazes of close colleagues and collaborators, and hardly seen footage from the ABC News libraries.

 

The policy encompasses new meetings with Bob Gruen, legendary rock ‘n’ twirl photog who seized the iconic image of Lennon in his “New York City” T-shirt; Jack Douglas, maker of Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “Double Fantasy” diary; and Elliot Mintz, a close colleague and Hollywood publicist. The two-hour policy also encompasses the previous meeting Lennon accomplished the day he perished and meetings with the radio reporters who administered it.

 

Not long before he perished, Lennon acknowledged he composed the songs. “He used to be cruel to my woman, and physically – any woman. He utilized to be cruel to his woman … He was a hitter … He battled men, and he hit women. That is why he constantly goes on about peace, you discern. It is the most brutal people who go for love and consensus … He is a brutal man who has memorized not to be violent and regrets his violence. He will have to be a lot older before he can face how he treated women as a youngster.”

 

At 25, Lennon wrote Run For Your Life, with its shocking admission: “I’d rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man”, a line he lifted from Arthur Gunter’s Baby, Let’s Play House, which was recorded by Elvis Presley. To drive home the point, Lennon added the lyrics, “Let this be a sermon he means everything he said; baby he is determined and he had rather see you dead.” Eight years overdue, Lennon would phone Run For Your Life his “least special Beatles song”. What transpired?

 

Lennon so frequently fell tight of his standards indicates his compassion. That he began again to thrive as a man indicates his obligation to self-modification. His statement of peace, love, gender and racial parity, and social judge echoes as deeply directly as ever.
