Jay-Z was born Sawn Corey Carter on the 4th of December, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York. He is the last born of the four children of Andes Reeves and Gloria Carter. Jay-Z, together with his siblings were primarily raised by their mother upon the disappearance of their father who left when he (Jay-Z) was just 11 years old. He was raised in the drug-manifested “Marcy Projects” where gun-culture was the norm. The influence from their neighborhood absorbed him into becoming a cocaine drug dealer as well as being swallowed by the gun-culture that he once shot his elder brother on the shoulder over a jewelry argument at home.

As for education, Jay-Z shifted schools from George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School to Trenton Central High School, and finally Whitney High School. Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G were some of his classmates. Jay-Z was passionate about music from an early age and was particularly inspired by a boom box birthday gift from his mother. It was then that Jay-Z started scripting lyrics and free-style rapping music by the then-popular artists. 

It was until 1989 that the young rapper joined rapper Jaz-O who became his mentor and taught him about rapping. As a way of showing appreciation to his rap guru, the upcoming rapper changed his street name from “Jazzy” to “Jay-Z”.
