Smokey Robinson is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer best known for being the founder and foreman of the Motown vocal group, “The Miracles”. He has written over 4000 songs with most of his works making it to the top of various charts. Some of his music credits include, “Tracks of my Tears”, “Tears of a Clown”, and “Love Machine” among others. Robinson’s lifetime contribution to popular music saw him being honored with many awards and accolades such as the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize as well as being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

William “Smokey” Robinson Jr. simply known as Smokey Robinson was born on the 19th of February 1940 in Detroit, Michigan. He, together with his two sisters, Rose Ella Jones, and Geraldine Burston are the children of Flossie and William Robinson. Both his parents are of African-American decent and were not well off financially. Robinson was nicknamed “Smokey” by his uncle, Claude when he was a child. The group was formed in 1955 and was originally the project of Robinson and his classmate, Pete Moore. Two years later, in 1957, the group changed its name to, “The Matadors”, and before long, new members including Bobby Rogers, Claudette, and guitarist Marv Tarplin joined the group. The group performed at different venues before later on changing its name to ‘The Miracle’.

At the take-off of their career, the Miracles suffered a major setback as they were rejected by several music-production companies, such as Brunswick Records. In 1957 however, following the group’s introduction to songwriter Berry Gordy, the first milestone was established since he helped them get signed by the End Records, under which they released their first single, “Got a Job”.

Gordy established his production company, Tamla Records, in 1959 and his first act was to sign the Miracles under this record label. A year later, in 1961, the group released their second single, “Shop Around” which made it to number one on the Billboard R&B chart and made over a million-copy sales.

Since debuting with the album, “Hi…We’re The Miracles” in 1961, the group went on to release eight other studio albums before changing their name to Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. Upon changing the name, the team released 12 other albums. All this time Robinson served as the group’s chief songwriter where he contributed to songs like “The Tears of a Clown”, “Baby Baby Don’t Cry”, “You’ve Got a Hold on Me”, “I Second That Emotion”, and “Mickey’s Monkey”.

While working with Smokey Robinson & the Miracles (Motown), Robinson also wrote songs for other artists and music groups including Mary Wells, s Brenda Holloway, as well as the Temptations. Some of his such works include, “Operator”, “When am Gone”, “Get Ready”, “Since I Lost My Baby”, “My Girl”, “The Way You Do The Things You Do”, “You Beat Me to the Punch”, and “My Guy”.
